An implementation intention is a self-regulatory strategy that takes the form of an "if-then" or "when-then" plan, specifying when, where, and how a person will perform a desired behavior. Developed by psychologist Peter Gollwitzer, it bridges the gap between goal intention ("I want to X") and actual behavior.

How It Works

  1. Set a Goal: Define what you want to achieve.
  2. Identify the Situation: Choose a specific time, place, or cue for action.
  3. Create the Plan: Formulate a statement: "When [situation X] occurs, I will perform [behavior Y]."
  4. Rehearse Mentally: Visualize yourself executing the plan to strengthen the association.
  5. Execute Automatically: When the cue appears, the planned behavior is triggered with reduced deliberation.
